Program Overview
What is the Meals On Wheels program in Delaware?
The Meals On wheels program is a daily nutrition program that provides homebound seniors over 60 years old with a nutritious meal delivered to their home. The meals are administrated by local nonprofit agencies and delivered by caring volunteers every day.
What is the goal of the Meals On Wheels program?
The program is aimed at promoting better health among the homebound, older segment of the population. Meals on Wheels programs provide improved nutrition and help to keep the individual in their own home, reducing the chance of institutionalization. The program also provides social contact to a person who may otherwise be homebound and isolated.
History and benefits of the program
Good nutrition is a major factor in keeping seniors healthy and independent. The Meals On Wheels program has been a part of Delaware since 1965. Meals On Wheels assists homebound seniors (and some disabled individuals) at all income levels who are unable to prepare meals for themselves. One hot, mid-day meal is delivered by volunteers Monday through Friday.
Meals On Wheels menus are approved by registered dietitians. Each meal supplies one-third of the federal nutritional Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA). When necessary, meals can be prepared for people with special dietary needs, but each agency offers a different selection of special diets.
Meals On Wheels is available on both a short-term (for people recovering from surgery and other temporary challenges) and on a continuing basis.
Who is eligible for the Meals On Wheels program?
Any senior, 60 and over, at any income level, usually living on their own, but unable to prepare meals. Disabled homebound adults ages 18 to 59 may be eligible if approved by DSAAPD.
What are the costs?
The suggested donation for seniors is $1.50 to $2.75 per day. No one is refused a meal based on their income level or ability to support this program.
When are the meals delivered?
One hot, ready-to-eat meal is delivered during lunch time, Monday through Friday. Meals may also be delivered on weekday holidays.
How is the food prepared?
All meals are approved by registered dietitians. All meals are made fresh daily at one of several kitchen sites throughout Delaware.
Are special diets available?
Some meal sites may be able to prepare special diets, such as renal or diabetic. All meals are prepared per strict DSAAPD guidelines, which require reduced salt and fat menus. Diet desserts are available.
